Tanzania maintained their momentum at the ongoing CHAN 2024 tournament with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Mauritania in Group B at the Benjamin Mpaka National Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday, August 6, 2025. Veteran defender Shomari Kapombe scored the decisive goal at the stroke of full-time, breaking down Mauritania's resilient defense.

The win takes CHAN 2024 co-hosts Tanzania to the top of Group B with six points, following their opening 2-0 win over Burkina Faso. Burkina Faso remains in second place with three points after defeating Central African Republic (CAR) 4-2 in an earlier match. Mauritania and Madagascar each have one point, while CAR is yet to secure any points.

Against CAR, Burkina Faso's goals came from Papus Ouattara, Abdoul Abass Guiro, Patrick Malo, and Abdoul Baguian. CAR’s Sydney Tchibinda and Ange Zoumara scored in a losing effort. The tournament, which features players from domestic African leagues, is being co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Zanzibar.

The next round of fixtures sees CAR facing Mauritania on August 9, followed by Tanzania’s crucial match against Madagascar to secure a knockout-stage berth. CHAN 2024 serves as a precursor to the AFCON 2027, also set to be held in East Africa.
