The Football Association (FA) is nearing its conclusion in the case of West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta, who has been at the center of a lengthy investigation involving alleged betting-related misconduct. The 27-year-old Brazilian international has been under scrutiny since August 2023, facing charges of deliberately accumulating yellow cards to influence the betting market during the 2022-23 and 2023-24 Premier League seasons.

According to sources familiar with the situation, the FA's ruling, which was shared with both Paqueta and West Ham, leans heavily in the player's favor. While the governing body had sought a lifetime ban, it appears that Paqueta may escape such a harsh penalty. However, the extent of any potential punishment remains uncertain.

The charges against Paqueta stem from four Premier League matches:

  • West Ham 0-2 Leicester City (November 2022): Paqueta was booked for a lunge on Leicester's Boubakary Soumare.
  • West Ham 1-1 Aston Villa (March 2023): He received a yellow card for a lunging challenge on John McGinn.
  • West Ham 3-1 Leeds United (May 2023): Paqueta was booked for pulling back Leeds winger Crysencio Summerville.
  • West Ham 1-1 Bournemouth (August 2023): He was carded for handball in the opening game of the 2023-24 season.

Additionally, Paqueta faced charges of failing to cooperate with the FA's investigation, relating to alleged breaches of FA Rule F2 and F3. These rules prohibit individuals associated with professional football from betting on any aspects of the sport.

Paqueta, who joined West Ham in August 2022 for an initial transfer fee of £36.5 million, has been a key figure for the club. He has scored four goals in 33 Premier League appearances during the 2023-24 season. Reflecting on the emotional toll of the investigation, Paqueta was seen in tears after being booked against Tottenham in May. His wife, Maria Fournier, described the ordeal as a "nightmare" in an Instagram post.

"For nine months, I have co-operated with every step of their investigation and provided all the information I can," Paqueta said last year after being charged. "I deny all the charges in their entirety and will fight with every breath to clear my name."

Since 2014, FA rules have prohibited individuals associated with professional football from betting on the sport. The outcome of this case could set a significant precedent for future cases involving similar allegations.
