West Ham playmaker Lucas Paqueta is facing a potential £150,000 fine from the FA for breaching rules during a betting investigation. Although cleared of spot-fixing charges in July, Paqueta was found guilty of two breaches of FA Rule F3 for failing to answer questions and provide information to investigators.
The 28-year-old Brazilian was accused of deliberately getting booked in several matches to help others win bets on him being shown a yellow card. However, after a two-year investigation, the FA confirmed that the claims were not proven, and Paqueta escaped a lifetime ban.
According to The Times, the FA is planning to impose a fine of around £150,000 on Paqueta for his lack of cooperation during the investigation. This amount is equivalent to approximately a week's wages for the West Ham star.
Paqueta has denied any wrongdoing and has spoken publicly about the mental health problems he faced during the long investigation. In a statement, he expressed his gratitude to his supporters and family, saying: "Since the first day of this investigation, I have maintained my innocence against these extremely serious accusations."
The midfielder has started the new season in fine form, scoring three goals in four games, including a penalty against Nottingham Forest on Sunday. He has also shut down rumors of a potential transfer to Aston Villa, celebrating his goal by kissing the West Ham badge.
The FA has yet to make a final decision on Paqueta's punishment, and it is unclear whether they will cover his legal fees, which could exceed £1 million.
