Nairobi, Kenya — Madagascar's journey at the CHAN 2024 tournament took a dramatic turn as they advanced to the semifinals following a hard-fought battle against co-hosts Kenya. The Islanders triumphed in a penalty shootout, defeating Kenya 4-3 after a 1-1 stalemate over 120 minutes at the Moi International Sports Center in Kasarani on Friday, August 22, 2025.
The first half of the quarterfinal match ended goalless, setting the stage for an intense second half. Gor Mahia’s Alphonce Omija broke the deadlock in the 48th minute, giving Kenya the lead. However, Madagascar's Fenohasina Razafimaro equalized from the penalty spot in the 71st minute, ensuring the match remained level at 1-1 after both the regular and extra time.
The deciding penalty shootout was a nail-biter. Madagascar's Nantenaina Randriamanampisoa, Lalaina Cliver Rafanomezantsoa, Fenohasina Razafimaro, and Toky Rakotondraibe all converted their penalties. Only Heriniaina Randrianirina missed for Madagascar. For Kenya, Mohammed Siraj, Daniel Sakari, and Sylvester Owino successfully scored, but Michael Kibwage and Alphonce Omija failed to convert, sealing Kenya's fate.
Meanwhile, in the other semifinal match, Tanzania will face Morocco at the Benjamin Mpaka National Stadium in Dar-es-Salaam.
