Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has welcomed the departure of goalkeeper Andre Onana, viewing it as a significant move in his quest to overhaul the club's dressing room dynamics. The Cameroon international is set to join Turkish side Trabzonspor on a season-long loan, clearing the path for a more positive environment at Old Trafford.
A source close to the situation revealed that Onana's relationship with Amorim had deteriorated over the past month, stating, "It felt like Andre was there just to show up but wasn't displaying any team mentality." The manager's frustration grew after Onana sustained a hamstring injury early in pre-season training, especially as the goalkeeper had been seen playing on a muddy field in his homeland just a month prior.
Onana's exit is part of a broader squad overhaul by Amorim, who has also seen Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, and Antony depart the club this summer. Additionally, left-back Tyrell Malacia appears poised to join Turkish side Eyupspor on a temporary deal.
Amorim's actions are aimed at fostering a more cohesive and committed squad ahead of the upcoming Manchester derby this Sunday. The manager has expressed satisfaction with the changes, believing they will pave the way for a brighter future.
Onana's departure comes after a series of disappointing performances, including an error-strewn display in the Carabao Cup defeat against Grimsby. His form led to his omission from the starting lineup for several matches, culminating in United's deadline-day signing of Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens for £18.2 million.
With Onana's loan move, Amorim now has Lammens, Altay Bayindir, and veteran Tom Heaton as his goalkeeping options. The manager faces a decision on whether to give Lammens his debut against Manchester City or stick with Bayindir for the time being.
Meanwhile, Onana's international form has also been scrutinized, with critics pointing to his mistake in Cameroon's 1-0 defeat against Cape Verde, a result that significantly hindered their World Cup qualification hopes.
