Manchester City star Phil Foden has paid a touching tribute to boxing legend Ricky Hatton, visiting his family to express his condolences. Hatton, a beloved figure in the boxing world, was found dead at his home in Greater Manchester at the age of 46.
Foden, who wore the shirt during Manchester City's derby win over United, arrived unannounced at Hatton's family home, accompanied by his partner Rebecca Cooke. He left a signed shirt with a heartfelt message, reading: "There is only 1 Ricky Hatton. Rest in peace, Phil."
The footballer also left a bouquet of flowers, a gesture that was deeply appreciated by the Hatton family. A source close to the family revealed that Foden's visit was a quiet and respectful one, with no fanfare or publicity.
"Phil came round very quietly - no fanfare, just to pay his respects," the source said. "The whole family was bowled over by the gesture, and the manner that Phil did it. Ricky would have been so proud."
Foden's tribute was not limited to his visit to the Hatton family. After Manchester City's 3-0 win over United, he dedicated the victory to Hatton and his family, saying: "It was for him and his family and for the people suffering right now. The lads gave everything."
Ricky Hatton's family has released a statement, thanking well-wishers for their support. His brother Matthew wrote: "I hope he's found the peace that eluded him in life."
Hatton's son Campbell has also paid a tribute to his father, posting a moving message on Instagram. He wrote: "Heartbroken isn't the word. Everybody has always said I was your double - never a truer word said. Looked up to you in every aspect of life. Can't explain how much I'm going to miss the laughs we had. Just can't believe we won't have any more. Love you, Dad."
Ricky Hatton was a celebrated boxer, winning world titles at both light-welterweight and welterweight. He had a remarkable career, winning 45 of his 48 fights, and will be remembered as one of the greatest boxers of his generation.
