Manchester United has granted Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot extended leave as they mourn the loss of their fellow Portuguese footballer, Diogo Jota. The Liverpool striker, along with his brother Andre, tragically passed away in a car accident last Thursday.

The heartbroken duo was scheduled to return to Manchester United's Carrington training base this week for pre-season preparations. However, the club has given them special permission to delay their return following their attendance at Jota's funeral in Portugal on Saturday.

A source close to the club revealed, "Bruno and Diogo are devastated and in shock after the funeral. Their teammates have shown immense support, and the club has offered them an additional week off, along with counselling or any other assistance they may need."

Fernandes and Dalot shared a long-standing connection with Jota, having played alongside him in the Portuguese national team for over a decade. The trio recently celebrated a Nations League victory together just weeks before the tragic incident.

Fernandes expressed his grief on social media, writing, "May you and your brother find the peace you need." Liverpool, Jota's club, has also postponed their squad's return to pre-season training in light of the tragedy. The team was initially set to resume on Friday but will now return on Monday.

Liverpool’s first pre-season match is scheduled for July 13 against Preston at Deepdale, followed by games against AC Milan and Yokohoma FM during their Japan tour later this month.

The football community continues to mourn the untimely loss of Diogo Jota, who was just 28 years old at the time of his passing.
