Manchester United has officially announced the acquisition of 22-year-old RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko in a transfer deal valued at £73.7 million. The agreement includes £66.3 million in fixed payments and £7.4 million in potential add-ons, marking the club’s third high-profile attacking addition this summer alongside Matheus Cunha (£62.5M) and Bryan Mbeumo (£65M with £6M add-ons).
Sesko, who joined Leipzig from Red Bull Salzburg in 2023, recorded 39 goals and eight assists across 87 appearances in all competitions. Of those, 27 goals came in 64 Bundesliga matches, establishing him as a prolific presence in Germany’s top tier. The towering 6ft 5in forward also demonstrated his physical dominance with a 57.4% success rate in aerial duels—the highest among Bundesliga strikers—and a remarkable top speed of 35.7km/h.
Despite ranking 16th in expected goals and 22nd in touches inside the opponent’s box over the past two seasons, Sesko’s versatility stood out. Last season, he increased his involvement across the pitch, with 9.7% of his touches in the attacking third and a growing influence on both flanks. His long-range threat is notable: 36.8% of his shots and 23.1% of his goals came from outside the box—surpassing all Bundesliga forwards with 12+ goals last term.
Amorim’s Vision and Club Ambitions
In his first comments as a United player, Sesko emphasized the club’s transformative vision: “The history of Manchester United is obviously very special, but what excites me most is the future. When we discussed the project, it was clear that everything is in place for this team to grow and compete for the biggest trophies again soon.”
Manager Ruben Amorim praised Sesko’s work ethic and adaptability: “He has the characteristics we needed. Ben is a player you’d have to stop from working—it’s not the other way around! That mindset is crucial for our group.”
Uncertain Outlook for Hojlund
Sesko’s arrival casts doubt over Rasmus Hojlund’s position at Old Trafford. The 22-year-old Denmark international, signed for £72 million in 2023, has scored just 14 Premier League goals across two campaigns and was an unused substitute in United’s recent pre-season clash with Fiorentina. Although Hojlund expressed interest in staying, the club is reportedly open to selling him for £30 million, with AC Milan exploring a loan deal.
Scouting Report: Why Sesko Stands Out
Manchester United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, highlighted Sesko’s unique attributes: “Benjamin possesses a rare mix of explosive speed and physicality, making him one of the most exceptional young talents in world football. Our data analysis confirms he has the qualities to thrive here and unlock his world-class potential under Ruben’s leadership.”
With Sesko joining Cunha and Mbeumo, United’s attacking overhaul totals £201 million. The club now shifts focus to addressing midfield weaknesses as Amorim’s rebuild gains momentum.
