The proposed £35m transfer of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi to Liverpool has been called off after the Eagles failed to finalize a replacement deal for their captain. The move, which was agreed upon following Guehi's standout performance in Palace's victory against Aston Villa, hit a major snag when Palace's attempts to sign Brighton's Igor Julio and Chelsea's Axel Disasi fell through.

Initial reports suggested that Julio's medical at West Ham and Palace's decision to abandon the deal were key factors in the collapse of the transfer. Despite submitting a deal sheet to the Premier League to extend the deadline, Crystal Palace ultimately chose not to proceed with the sale, much to the relief of head coach Oliver Glasner. Glasner had previously emphasized the importance of retaining Guehi, stating that his presence was crucial for the team's success this season.

Guehi, who has just one year remaining on his current contract, is now set to stay at Crystal Palace. The club aims to avoid losing him for free at the end of the season, which would have been a significant blow to their defensive plans. In a move to bolster their youth development, Palace signed 19-year-old centre-back Jaydee Canvot from Toulouse for £20.8m on deadline day. However, Glasner had made it clear that he sought a Premier League-ready replacement for Guehi.

Crystal Palace also maintain an interest in AC Milan defender Strahinja Pavlovic, with discussions ongoing regarding a potential long-term deal. Pavlovic, who was previously linked with Manchester City's Manuel Akanji and Liverpool's Joe Gomez, could provide a viable option for the Eagles in the future. Meanwhile, Chelsea's Axel Disasi, who spent last season on loan at Aston Villa, remains a free agent and was another target for Palace during the transfer window.
