Manchester United's pre-season campaign got off to a lackluster start as they were held to a goalless draw by newly promoted Leeds United in Stockholm. New signing Matheus Cunha showcased his fiery temperament on his debut, but it wasn't enough to ignite the Red Devils' attacking prowess.
Cunha, who joined United from Wolves, had a limited impact in front of goal. His best opportunity came in the 42nd minute when an Amad Diallo cross found him in the box, but Leeds' young defender Chido Obi intercepted the ball, prompting a heated exchange between the two players.
United's preparations for the match were far from ideal, with heavy traffic around the stadium delaying their warm-up. Manager Ruben Amorim, in his first pre-season outing with the club, will be concerned by his side's inability to create clear-cut chances. Veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton emerged as the surprise standout performer, making two crucial saves in the second half to keep Leeds at bay.
The match also saw a debut for teenage full-back Diego Leon, who looked understandably rusty in his first appearance on European soil. United came closest to scoring late in the game when Kobbie Mainoo's effort hit the crossbar, followed by Ayden Heaven's blocked shot and Mainoo's acrobatic attempt, which was superbly saved by Leeds' Illan Meslier.
Leeds co-owner and Hollywood actor Will Ferrell was among the spectators, adding a touch of star power to the occasion. Meanwhile, off the pitch, Manchester United confirmed a major development as Marcus Rashford agreed to a loan move to Barcelona with an option to buy.
While Cunha's debut provided glimpses of his potential, Amorim will be looking for significant improvements in his team's attacking output as they continue their pre-season preparations.
