The value of McLaren Racing has skyrocketed to approximately £3.5 billion following a significant restructure of its ownership. This remarkable surge represents more than a sixfold increase in the company's valuation since 2020, underscoring the substantial growth and success the team has achieved under new leadership.
The change in ownership involves Mumtalakat, Bahrain's sovereign investment fund, and CYVN Holdings from Abu Dhabi, acquiring the remaining shares from minority stakeholders. Notably, US investment group MSP Capital, which initially purchased a 33% stake in McLaren Racing for £185 million in 2018 (valuing the company at £560 million at the time), has been bought out.
Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren Racing, expressed his satisfaction with the development, stating, "It's a great day for McLaren. We've had an amazing journey to get back to where we are now." He highlighted the team's progress from a challenging position to becoming competitive again, thanks in part to the cost-cap era in F1.
The restructure simplifies McLaren Racing's ownership structure while bolstering its capital base, positioning the company for continued success both on and off the track. McLaren Racing has been performing exceptionally well, with its Formula 1 team currently leading in both the drivers' and constructors' championships. Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris are first and second in the drivers' standings, having secured 12 out of 15 races so far this season.
The team's success is not limited to Formula 1; it also operates a prominent team in the IndyCar World Series and is set to enter the World Endurance Championship in 2027. After closing its Formula E team, McLaren is focusing on its core racing endeavors.
Paul Walsh, Executive Chairman of the McLaren Group, praised the minority investors for their support over the years, saying, "We now have two fantastic shareholders in Mumtalakat and CYVN, whose additional investment strengthens our ability to future-proof the business."
The valuation increase is also reflective of the growing value of all F1 teams since Liberty Media acquired the commercial rights to the sport in 2017. McLaren's success under Zak Brown's leadership since 2016 and Andrea Stella's tenure as team principal since December 2022 has been particularly noteworthy, with the team winning the constructors' championship last year and currently vying for a drivers' and constructors' title double.
