PFA Awards 2025 Highlights: Salah, Rogers, and Southgate Excel

Mohamed Salah has added a third PFA Men's Player of the Year award to his collection, solidifying his status as a global football icon. The Liverpool winger became the first player to secure the honor three times, a testament to his pivotal role in Liverpool’s 2024-25 Premier League title triumph. Salah netted 29 goals, provided 18 assists, and claimed the league’s Player of the Season title, while also earning the Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Footballer of the Year accolade.

Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers, a 23-year-old midfielder, claimed the Young Player of the Year award, joining an elite list of winners including former legends like Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney. Rogers’ breakthrough season at Villa—54 appearances, 14 goals, and a Champions League quarter-final run—caught the eye of national selectors, who called him up for his first England cap in November. “I want to be one of those incredible players people speak about,” Rogers told BBC Sport.

Sir Gareth Southgate, England’s manager from 2016 to 2024, was honored with the PFA Merit Award for his transformative impact on the national team. Southgate’s tenure saw England reach the Euro 2020 and 2024 finals, the 2018 World Cup semi-finals, and develop a storied squad with 42 debutants under his command.

The Premier League team of the year, voted by peers, showcased Liverpool and Arsenal talent. Salah, Alexis Mac Allister, and Ryan Gravenberch (Liverpool) anchored the midfield, while Declan Rice (Arsenal), Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool), and Alexander Isak (Newcastle) formed the forward trio. Nottingham Forest’s Matz Sels and Chris Wood joined the XI, with goalkeeper Milos Kerkez (Bournemouth/Liverpool) completing the defense.

Elsewhere, Burnley’s James Trafford claimed the Championship Player of the Year after keeping 29 clean sheets in promotion-defining form. League One’s Richard Kone (Queens Park Rangers) and League Two’s Michael Cheek (Bromley) earned their respective awards after scoring 18 and 25 goals respectively.

The PFA Awards celebrate excellence across English football, with Salah, Rogers, and Southgate embodying the pinnacle of skill, youth, and legacy. Stay tuned for more 2025 honors as the season unfolds.
