Local officials in northern Spain have launched an investigation after a cherished monument honoring golf icon Severiano "Seve" Ballesteros vanished from its permanent display site. The life-sized bronze sculpture disappeared over the weekend from La Barqueria Park in Pedrena - Ballesteros' birthplace.
Community Alert Issued
The Marina de Cudeyo municipal council described the incident as "deeply regrettable" in a social media statement, urging residents to report any suspicious activity to the Civil Guard or local police. "We're particularly interested in any unusual movements observed during the past day," the announcement read.
Tribute to Golf Legend
Created in 2009 by renowned sculptor Salvador Garcia Ceballos, the artwork immortalized Ballesteros' triumphant moment at the 1984 Open Championship in St Andrews. The Spanish champion staged a remarkable comeback against Tom Watson during the final round, securing victory by two strokes and preventing the American from achieving a historic three-peat.
Ballesteros, who passed away in 2011 at age 54 following a battle with brain cancer, remains one of golf's most celebrated figures. The charismatic player claimed five major championships and played pivotal roles in four European Ryder Cup victories - twice as competitor and later as captain.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have yet to determine potential motives for the statue's removal from its park setting, where it had stood since 2017. The Cantabria region town, located near Santander, has long taken pride in its connection to the golfing great, making the disappearance particularly distressing for local residents.
Forensic teams are examining the site while investigators review surveillance footage from nearby areas. No official statements regarding suspects or recovery efforts have been released as of Tuesday morning.
