The New York Giants have announced the firing of head coach Brian Daboll, effective immediately. The decision comes on the heels of Sunday's 24-20 loss to the Chicago Bears, which saw the Giants blow a 10-point lead.
In a statement released by the team, president John Mara and chairman Steve Tisch confirmed that the franchise had decided to make a change at the head coaching position, citing a desire to improve the team's on-field product. "The past few seasons have been nothing short of disappointing, and we have not met our expectations for this franchise," the statement read.
Daboll, who took over as head coach in 2022, had a regular-season record of 20-40-1 during his time with the Giants. His tenure was marked by a few bright spots, including a 2022 season that saw the team make the playoffs behind a stellar performance from quarterback Daniel Jones and running back Saquon Barkley.
However, the team's progress stalled in subsequent seasons, with Daboll's .336 winning percentage ranking 154th out of 166 coaches with 50-plus games since 1970. The Giants have now lost four straight games and are on track for a third consecutive losing season under Daboll.
Offensive coordinator Mike Kafka will take over as interim head coach, while general manager Joe Schoen will lead the search for a new permanent coach. The team has expressed gratitude to Daboll for his contributions and wished him well in the future.
Daboll's departure comes as no surprise, given the team's struggles this season. The Giants had high hopes for the 2025 campaign, but a disastrous 3-14 finish in 2024 and a slow start this year had put both Daboll and Schoen firmly on the hot seat.
The decision to fire Daboll marks a new chapter for the Giants, who will look to turn their fortunes around under new leadership. As for Daboll, he will look to revive his coaching career after a tumultuous spell in New York.
