Lando Norris delivered a masterclass at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, securing his second consecutive victory and cementing his position as the dominant force in the 2025 Formula 1 title race. The British driver’s flawless performance—taking pole and winning both the sprint and main race—extended his lead over McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri to 24 points, despite Verstappen’s near-perfect display at Interlagos, which left the Dutch driver 49 points behind Norris.
The season’s trajectory has shifted dramatically for Norris and Piastri, with the latter’s fortunes unraveling over the past seven races. After entering the summer break with a 34-point advantage following his seventh win, Piastri’s form has faltered, while Norris has steadily improved, closing a 58-point gap in the process. This turnaround, spanning just over two months, has seen Norris shed early-season inconsistencies and emerge as a contender to fulfill his status as the season’s pre-race favorite.
Following his victory, Norris downplayed thoughts of the championship, stating, “Not at all,” when asked if he was focusing on the title. However, the reality is that his control of the race and his ability to capitalize on Piastri’s missteps have positioned him as the clear favorite. “I’m disappointed we weren’t quicker today,” Norris admitted, acknowledging Verstappen’s impressive pace. “My mind is on analyzing where we can improve, not on the standings.”
Piastri’s weekend was another challenging chapter, marked by a crash in the sprint race and a controversial collision in the grand prix. During a restart, his aggressive move on Kimi Antonelli and Charles Leclerc led to a crash that damaged Leclerc’s car. While Leclerc suggested Antonelli shared some blame, stewards ruled entirely in favor of Piastri, handing him a 10-second penalty. The Australian expressed acceptance of the decision, saying, “It kind of is what it is,” but admitted, “I’m more concerned about the championship than anything else.”
With 83 points still up for grabs in the final three races, the title remains within reach for Verstappen, who continues to defy odds. Norris, though, now holds a commanding lead, with the next showdown in Las Vegas from 20-22 November. His focus on self-improvement and resilience has become a hallmark, as he reflected, “I’ve learned to be true to myself and believe in my decisions, rather than overthinking external pressures.”
