France’s all-time leading goal scorer, Olivier Giroud, has made a highly anticipated return to French football by signing a one-year deal with Lille. The 38-year-old striker’s move comes after he departed Major League Soccer side Los Angeles FC, where he played his final match on June 30.
Giroud, who turns 39 in September, last played in France’s top flight 13 years ago when he helped Montpellier secure the 2011-12 Ligue 1 title before moving to Arsenal. Reflecting on his return, Giroud expressed his excitement, stating, "I'm very happy and excited to be back in France, home. It made perfect sense to return to Ligue 1 after 13 years. I've always considered Lille a top French club."
The veteran forward emphasized his role in the team, adding, "It's a young and talented squad, which needs experienced players like me. So I'll also be there in that role." Giroud brings a wealth of experience, having scored 105 goals in six seasons with Arsenal, where he won the FA Cup three times. He later enjoyed further success at Chelsea, lifting the FA Cup, Europa League, and Champions League trophies.
Giroud’s move to LAFC last summer followed his contributions to AC Milan’s Serie A title win in 2022. However, his time in the United States was less impactful, with just five goals in 37 appearances across all competitions. Internationally, Giroud retired last year as France’s record goal scorer, netting 57 times in 137 caps and playing a key role in their 2018 World Cup triumph.
Lille fans will be eager to see how Giroud’s experience and leadership can bolster their squad as they aim for success in the upcoming season.
