Paris St-Germain opened their defence of the Ligue 1 title with a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Nantes on Monday. The decisive goal came in the 67th minute through substitute Vitinha, whose shot deflected off the unfortunate Nantes defender Chidozie Awaziem and flew into the net, leaving Anthony Lopes with no chance.

The goal proved enough for the Paris giants to overcome a Nantes side that moved up significantly in the table from their previous campaign. While PSG won their fourth successive Ligue 1 title last season, coach Luis Enrique fielded a markedly different lineup, introducing seven changes from the side that won the Super Cup final in a penalty shootout win against Tottenham earlier that week.

The match also marked the debut of defender Illia Zabarnyi, who joined PSG from Premier League side Bournemouth for a reported fee of £57 million. Forward Goncalo Ramos, playing his first game since joining the club, appeared to have added a second goal but it was correctly flagged offside by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

PSG, who had only recently returned to training after lifting the FIFA Club World Cup, will look to build on this result against Angers in their next Ligue 1 fixture.
