British tennis stars Emma Raducanu and Katie Boulter both secured spots in WTA finals, marking a significant achievement for British women's tennis. Raducanu, the British No. 1, reached her first final since her historic 2021 US Open victory, while Boulter advanced to her fifth career final.
In a grueling three-set semi-final at the Transylvania Open in Cluj, Romania, Raducanu triumphed over Oleksandra Oliynykova. The match lasted nearly three hours, with Raducanu ultimately winning 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. The British No. 1, seeded first in the event, will face Romanian third seed Sorana Cirstea in the final on Saturday.
"Ole, what a competitor," Raducanu said post-match. "She made so many balls tricky... But I'm most proud of how I fought and competed myself and came back in that third set."
Raducanu, who recently parted ways with her coach Francis Roig, has shown resilience, winning four matches in five days in Cluj. She admitted the emotional significance of reaching her first final in five years.
"I haven't been in the final for five years now, so it's an amazing achievement. Really grateful for what I've put out this week," Raducanu stated.
Meanwhile, in the Ostrava Open, British No. 2 Katie Boulter dominated her semi-final match against American Katie Volynets, winning 6-1, 6-3. Boulter will face Germany's Tamara Korpatsch in the final.
For the first time in WTA history, two British women will compete in separate finals on the same day. Raducanu's final is scheduled for 2:30 PM, while Boulter's match will begin at 3:00 PM on Saturday.
