Rangers Finalize Talks for Kevin Muscat as Russell Martin's Replacement
Glasgow Rangers have advanced significantly in their quest to secure Kevin Muscat as the next permanent manager, following ongoing discussions with the Australian coach currently leading Shanghai Port in China. The club, which dismissed Russell Martin on October 5, is in the final stages of negotiations with Muscat, who narrowly missed out on the role in 2023. If terms are agreed, Muscat may need to stay with his current team until their domestic title race concludes, potentially delaying his arrival at Ibrox.
Neil McCann Eyes Interim Role
Should Muscat's transition require additional time, Neil McCann is being considered as an interim replacement. The former Rangers player and coach, who worked with Muscat during the 2002/03 domestic treble campaign, is set to join the club’s backroom staff once Muscat’s appointment is finalized. McCann, who has been involved in Sky Sports’ coverage of the Scottish Premiership, also served as part of the interim management team last season under Barry Ferguson.
Competing Candidates and Process
Rangers explored several options beyond Muscat, including former Ibrox manager Steven Gerrard, who withdrew from the process due to timing concerns, and Danny Rohl, who had previously been linked to the role before Martin’s appointment. Other names floated included Graham Potter, Gary O’Neil, and Bo Svensson. The club’s leadership, led by chairman Andrew Cavenagh and vice-chairman Paraag Marathe, emphasized a "rigorous, thoughtful recruitment process," with key figures like technical director Gretar Steinsson and sporting director Kevin Thelwell also involved in the discussions.
Muscat’s Track Record and Hierarchy Approval
Muscat, who has claimed titles in Australia, Japan, and China, has impressed Rangers’ management with his adaptability and success across different leagues. Former teammate Mark Bosnich praised Muscat’s potential, stating, “He’s a good choice for Rangers. As a manager, he’s much more adaptable than Ange Postecoglou, and he’s willing to adjust his principles to achieve results.” Despite his reputation as a fiery player, Bosnich highlighted Muscat’s maturity as a coach, noting his ability to thrive in diverse football environments.
Upcoming Match and Transition Challenges
Rangers’ next fixture, a clash against Dundee United on Saturday, will be overseen by U19 coach Steven Smith, who has been managing first-team training since Martin’s sacking. The club currently sits eighth in the Scottish Premiership, and the transition period poses logistical hurdles, including time zone differences as negotiations continue across London, Glasgow, and Shanghai. While the deal remains pending, the club’s leadership has expressed confidence in Muscat’s ability to steer Rangers back to their former glory.
