Reading FC has officially announced Leam Richardson as their new first-team manager, replacing Noel Hunt after a disappointing start to the League One campaign. The 45-year-old has signed a contract until summer 2027, tasked with steering the club away from relegation concerns.

Proven Track Record

Richardson brings experience from previous roles at Rotherham United and Wigan Athletic, where he secured the League One title in 2022. Despite recent setbacks—including Wigan’s Championship struggles and Rotherham’s relegation—his promotion-winning pedigree caught the attention of Reading’s ownership.

“Leam embodies the qualities we value: hard work, honesty, and a proven ability to develop players,” said Reading owner Rob Couhig. “His understanding of this league and commitment to building strong cultures align perfectly with our vision.”

Backroom Additions

Joining Richardson are assistant Danny Schofield and coach James Beattie, the former Southampton striker. Their collective expertise aims to address Reading’s current challenges, including injuries to key players like the first-choice goalkeeper and central defenders.

Tough Road Ahead

BBC Radio Berkshire’s Tim Dellor noted Richardson faces an uphill battle: “With no fit strikers and struggling new signings, expectations must be realistic. His first test comes in the FA Cup against Carlisle, followed by league clashes with former clubs Wigan and Rotherham.”

Richardson’s appointment marks a departure from Reading’s recent managerial trends, opting for practicality over glamour. Fans will hope his no-nonsense approach can spark a turnaround for the 19th-placed side.
