The Fashion World Awaits: The Devil Wears Prada 2 is Here to Stay
In 2006, audiences worldwide were entranced by the witty and biting comedy, The Devil Wears Prada, based on Lauren Weisberger's novel of the same name. The film, which starred Meryl Streep as the famed Miranda Priestly, has since gained a cult following and even been adapted for the stage. After two decades of anticipation, fans can rejoice as a sequel is finally in the works. Here's what we know so far.
Star-Studded Cast Returns
Meryl Streep will once again embody the terrifying yet captivating fashion magazine editor, Miranda Priestly, who is known for her demanding nature and exceptional taste in cerulean sweaters. Anne Hathaway will reprise her role as Andrea "Andy" Sachs, while Emily Blunt will return as Emily, Andy's fellow assistant who has hopefully given up her challenging diet.
Stanley Tucci will also return as Nigel, Miranda's right-hand man, who is due a promotion after his life took an unexpected turn. Kenneth Branagh is set to join the cast as Miranda's husband, while Adrian Grenier, who played Andrea's boyfriend Nate, will not be returning.
A New Story for the Fashion Industry
Lauren Weisberger wrote a sequel to her original novel, Revenge Wears Prada, in 2013. While it remains unclear how closely the film will follow the book, the sequel is rumored to be based on it. In the book, Andy is now a successful magazine editor in her own right, working closely with Emily, before Miranda re-enters her life.
The film will reportedly focus on Miranda navigating the decline of traditional magazine publishing and courting Emily, who is now a high-powered executive for a luxury brand, for advertising revenue. Interestingly, Anna Wintour, who the character of Miranda Priestly is modeled after, recently stepped down as editor-in-chief of Vogue after 37 years.
Creative Team Reunites for Sequel
The original film's producer, Wendy Finerman, and director, David Frankel, are returning for the sequel, while Aline Brosh McKenna will once again write the screenplay. McKenna has also written Cruella, Morning Glory, 27 Dresses, and I Don't Know How She Does It since 2006.
Release Date Announced
The Devil Wears Prada 2 is set to be released in cinemas on Friday, 1 May 2026, just in time for fashion's biggest night, the Met Gala, which takes place on the first Monday in May. A teaser for the film has been released, showing two identical red stiletto heels, accompanied by the words: "Now in production." A full trailer is expected to follow in due course.
The sequel to the beloved film promises to bring back the wit and humor that made the original such a success, while exploring the changing landscape of the fashion industry. Get ready to once again be charmed and challenged by the characters we love to hate and hate to love.
