Cameroon midfielder Carlos Baleba has set an ambitious goal for himself: to become the best midfielder in the world. The 21-year-old, currently plying his trade with Brighton and Hove Albion, has been drawing inspiration from several football greats as he strives to achieve this lofty ambition. Baleba's impressive performances have not gone unnoticed, with Manchester United reportedly showing interest in his services.

Baleba, who joined Brighton as a replacement for Moises Caicedo in 2023, quickly established himself as one of the Premier League's most promising midfielders. In his debut season, he made 27 league appearances, and the following campaign saw him score three goals in 34 games. His stellar form caught the eye of United, who made him their top transfer target for the 2025-26 season. However, negotiations stalled due to Brighton's reported £100 million asking price.

The youngster's form has dipped this season, with injuries and speculation surrounding his future reportedly affecting his performances. Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler acknowledged the challenge of managing a young player amid transfer rumors, emphasizing the need to understand Baleba's emotions and feelings.

Despite the distractions, Baleba remains focused on his ultimate goal. He has been studying the games of several midfield maestros, including Paul Pogba, Thiago Alcantara, Kevin De Bruyne, and Sergio Busquets. He also looks to Manchester City's Rodri and other stars from leagues across Europe for inspiration.

"An ambition [of mine] is to be the best midfielder in the world," Baleba told Sky Sports. "I just want to work hard, to take some advice, to take something from the midfielders. Not just in the Premier League... I try to learn every day."

Baleba will have the opportunity to showcase his talents on the international stage when Cameroon kicks off their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign against Gabon. The Indomitable Lions are also set to face Ivory Coast and Mozambique in Group F.

Meanwhile, Brighton will be looking to bounce back from a challenging season when they face Premier League leaders Arsenal this weekend, followed by a trip to West Ham United on December 30.
