Fridolina Rolfo's first goal for Manchester United proved to be the difference as the Red Devils narrowly defeated Atletico Madrid 1-0 in a grueling Women's Champions League match. The Swedish forward, who joined United from Barcelona this summer, volleyed home a stunning goal in the 24th minute to give her side the lead.

United, who had won their opening Champions League game against Valerenga, faced a stern test in the Spanish capital. However, they showcased remarkable resilience to hold on to their lead despite both teams being reduced to ten players.

Manager Marc Skinner praised his team's character after the game, stating, "We had to defend for our lives in the second half. I felt we started the game really well and should have scored a couple of goals. Overall I think it showed tremendous character as a team to withstand Atleti's attack. I'm really, really proud of the players."

The first half saw United create several chances, with Ella Toone coming close early on. Rolfo's goal came after a perfectly timed run, as she met a cross from the left and powered a volley into the roof of the net. United could have doubled their lead minutes later, but Melvine Malard's effort went wide.

The game took a turn when Dominique Janssen was sent off for a late challenge on Gio Garbelini. The VAR review upheld the red card, leaving United to defend their lead with ten players. Atletico pushed for an equalizer, forcing several saves from United keeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce, but the visitors held firm.

Atletico's hopes were further dented when Alexia Fernandez was sent off for a foul on Leah Galton. United then saw out the remaining minutes to secure a vital three points, joining the likes of Barcelona and Lyon at the top of the group.

Looking ahead, United will face Brighton in the Women's Super League before hosting Paris St-Germain in the Champions League. Atletico, meanwhile, will travel to Deportivo in Liga F and then host Juventus in the Champions League.

The match's player ratings saw Fridolina Rolfo top the charts with an average rating of 8.10. For Atletico, goalkeeper Lola Gallardo received the highest rating of 5.64.
