The Professional Fighters League (PFL) has acknowledged the incident involving their champion, Timur Khizriev, following a video circulating online depicting the Russian fighter being shot by two assailants in Makhachkala, Russia.
The distressing footage captures the 29-year-old Khizriev coming under attack as he exits his vehicle, with two gunmen targeting him. Despite sustaining multiple gunshot wounds, Khizriev managed to grapple with one of the attackers while the other fired at him from close range. Fortunately, Khizriev escaped further harm by fleeing the scene.
Reports from Russian media indicate that Khizriev is currently in stable condition, although he has suffered injuries to his shoulder, hand, and chest, requiring surgical intervention.
The PFL released a statement expressing their awareness of the situation and their ongoing communication with Khizriev's representatives. They extended their thoughts and support to the champion and his family during this challenging time.
Khizriev, who holds an impeccable record of 18 victories in his professional career, clinched the PFL featherweight tournament title in November by defeating Brendan Loughnane from Britain.
As the mixed martial arts community rallies behind Khizriev, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by athletes both inside and outside the ring.
