In a highly anticipated West African derby in the CHAN 2024 tournament, Senegal triumphed over Nigeria with a 1-0 victory, taking them to the top of Group D standings with maximum points.

The match, held at the Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar on Tuesday, 5th August 2025, saw Christian Gomis score the decisive goal for the defending champions. Gomis found the back of the net in the 75th minute, beating Nigeria's goalkeeper Mustapha Lawal from a close range.

With this win, Senegal now leads Group D, leaving Congo and Sudan with a point each from their 1-1 draw. Sudan had initially taken the lead through Hussein Musa in the 29th minute, but Congo managed to equalize with Carly Landon Ekongo's late goal.

The CHAN tournament features players from African domestic leagues, and this year's edition is being co-hosted by three countries - Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. The competition serves as a precursor to AFCON 2027 and aims to showcase the talent within the continent.

Next, the action will shift to Group B in Tanzania, with Burkina Faso set to face off against Central African Republic at the Benjamin Mpaka National Stadium on Wednesday, 6th August 2025.
