Southampton has announced the dismissal of manager Will Still after just 13 games in charge, with the club currently sitting 21st in the Championship table, mere points above the relegation zone. The Saints, who were relegated from the Premier League last season, have struggled this campaign, securing only two victories in their 13 league matches.
Still, who joined the club in May following his departure from Ligue 1 side RC Lens, has overseen a difficult period for the South Coast outfit. Their latest setback came on Saturday with a 2-0 home defeat to Preston North End, extending their losing streak to three consecutive matches and leaving them with just one win in their last 11 games across all competitions.
In response to the management change, U21 head coach Tonda Eckert will take temporary charge of the first team. Group technical director Johannes Spors released a statement on the club's official website, expressing gratitude to Still for his efforts while acknowledging the need for a change. "Will is a great person who gave everything to try and improve performances and results," Spors said. "Ultimately that process has taken longer than any of us would have liked. By making a change now we believe it gives us the best chance of turning things around this season and climbing back up the league table."
The club has also confirmed that goalkeeper coach Ruben Martinez, first team analyst Clement Lemaitre, and coach Carl Martin have left their positions.
Southampton's immediate focus will be on halting their slide down the Championship table and securing their status in the second tier of English football. The club will hope that a change in management can provide the spark needed to turn their fortunes around.
