Spanish police suggest that Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota was the driver of the car involved in a fatal crash that occurred last Thursday in Zamora province's A52 motorway. The 28-year-old Liverpool player and his brother, Andrés Silva, 25, were pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Spain's Guardia Civil police force, the car was apparently overtaking when it veered off the road and burst into flames. The local traffic police in Zamora have pointed out that the evidence suggests excessive speed was a factor in the accident, as the car was traveling beyond the speed limit of the highway.

Tyre marks were analyzed, and the tests carried out so far indicate that the driver of the crashed vehicle was Diogo Jota. The expert report on the accident is being prepared for the courts, and the investigation is complicated by the intensity of the fire that almost completely destroyed the car.

The accident occurred 11 days after Jota had married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso in Portugal. The couple had three children. The brothers had been heading to the Spanish port of Santander so Jota could return to Liverpool for pre-season training.

The funeral for Jota and his brother took place in their hometown of Gondomar, near Porto, at the weekend. Tyre marks were reportedly visible about 100m (330ft) from the impact point.

Although there had been suggestions that the asphalt on the road was uneven where the crash took place, police have stated that the road was not an "accident black spot" and should have been driveable beyond the speed limit of 120km/h (75mph).
