Surge in VPN Downloads in UK App Store Amid Age Verification Requirements

Following the enforcement of age verification regulations by websites including PornHub and Reddit in the UK, Virtual Private Network (VPN) apps have witnessed a significant spike in downloads, dominating the top positions on Apple's App Store charts in the country.

VPNs enable users to mask their online location, granting them access to the internet as if they were in a different geographical location. This surge in VPN downloads is believed to be a response to the Online Safety Act, which mandates platforms showing certain adult content to verify users' ages.

As of Monday, half of the top ten free apps on Apple's UK App Store were VPN services, with a reported 1,800% increase in downloads for some providers. VPNs reroute users' connections through remote servers, concealing their IP addresses and allowing them to bypass restrictions on specific websites or content.

While platforms displaying adult content are required to implement robust age verification methods, concerns have been raised about the privacy risks associated with free VPN services. Cybersecurity experts warn that some free VPNs may compromise users' data security by exposing them to potential attacks or serving as conduits for data harvesting.

Katie Freeman-Tayler from Internet Matters expressed worry about the availability of free VPN services to children, making it easier for them to circumvent age verification checks. However, Ofcom has emphasized that platforms with stringent age verification requirements must not condone or facilitate the use of VPNs to bypass these checks, as doing so would be deemed illegal by the government.

Proton VPN and Free VPN, two of the VPN apps experiencing a surge in UK downloads, have highlighted the spike in sign-ups since the implementation of age verification rules. While privacy-focused VPN services underscore their commitment to user data protection, experts caution that many individuals opt for free VPNs without fully understanding the potential risks to their privacy.
