Australian teenage sprinter Gout Gout has made a stunning senior international debut, clinching victory in the men's 200m and setting a new national record at the Golden Spike meeting in Ostrava, Czech Republic. The 17-year-old clocked an impressive 20.02 seconds, surpassing his previous personal best of 20.04 seconds, which he achieved last December.
In a thrilling race, Gout outpaced Reynier Mena, a Cuban sprinter based in Portugal, who had won the previous two Diamond League 200m races. Mena finished second, while Britain's Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake secured third place with a season's best of 20.60 seconds.
"I feel great. A new personal best and a national record in my first European race—it's fantastic," Gout said after the race. "I don't feel any pressure. When I step onto the track, it's just me and my goal: to run. That's what I love to do, and nothing can stop me."
Gout's performance has drawn comparisons to sprinting legend Usain Bolt. Notably, his time in Ostrava was faster than Bolt's 20.28 seconds at his first Golden Spike appearance in 2006. However, Gout is yet to break the elusive 20-second barrier, a feat Bolt achieved at the age of 17 with a time of 19.93 seconds.
Before his senior debut, Gout dominated youth competitions, holding Australian under-16 records in both the 100m and 200m. Last year, he won the national under-20 100m title and secured a silver medal in the 200m at the World Under-20 Championships in Lima. Following his victories in the 200m and 400m at the 2024 GPS Track & Field Championships in Queensland, Gout turned professional and signed a sponsorship deal with Adidas.
Gout will continue his preparations for the World Championships in Tokyo this September by competing at the Monaco Diamond League meet on July 11. The young sprinter remains focused on improving his times and aims to break the 20-second mark in the near future.
Other notable performances at the Golden Spike included pole vault world record holder Armand Duplantis, who cleared 6.13m, and Kenyan teenager Phanuel Koech, who set a meeting record in the men's 1500m with a time of 3:29.05.
