Tottenham Hotspur have completed the acquisition of Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig in a £51 million transfer, marking the club’s seventh summer signing as they surpass £170 million in spending. The 22-year-old attacker, who had been a target for Chelsea throughout the summer, chose Spurs after decisive talks with head coach Thomas Frank, who emphasized the importance of the move in bolstering the team’s attacking options.
Simons, a versatile forward, signed a five-year contract with the option for two additional years, a deal that has been described as a “great relief” for Frank following the loss of James Maddison to a season-ending knee injury. The Netherlands international expressed his excitement about joining the club, stating, “I’m really happy and can’t wait to get going. I’ve been dreaming of this for a long time.” He highlighted his commitment to bringing “flair, hard work, and discipline” to the team, aiming to contribute to success for both the squad and fans.
The signing also sees Simons inherit Heung-Min Son’s iconic No. 7 jersey, a number he previously wore during his time at PSV Eindhoven and with the Netherlands national team. “He [Son] made his own story with this number. I hope to create my own,” Simons said, acknowledging the legacy of the previous captain. His move comes as Spurs continue their search for a “No. 10” role, having missed out on previous targets like Morgan Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze, which were snatched by rivals Arsenal.
Simons, a product of Barcelona’s La Masia academy, joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2019 before making a name for himself during a successful loan spell at PSV in the 2022/23 season. While Chelsea had valued him between £43.3m and £47.6m, they ultimately focused on securing Alejandro Garnacho, allowing Tottenham to clinch the deal. The club plans to unveil Simons ahead of their Premier League clash against Bournemouth, with Sky Sports News confirming they are still targeting a left-winger in the final days of the transfer window.
