Advantage Uganda Cranes as Algeria and South Africa Stalemate

Uganda's national football team, the Cranes, have solidified their position at the summit of Group C in the TotalEnergies Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 following a double draw on Friday. Competing against South Africa and Algeria in the second round of matches, both the Desert Foxes and the Proteas returned with point-scoring deficits, ensuring the Cranes hold onto their advantage heading into their final Group C fixture against South Africa.

The results level the playing field within the group. In their encounter, Algeria drew 1-1 with Guinea. The Desert Foxes trailed until Sofiane Bayazid equalized in the dying moments of the match, leaving the West Africans frustrated after their earlier lead was overturned. Meanwhile, South Africa faced a stern test against Niger, resulting in a 0-0 stalemate watched by a large crowd. Notably, the South Africans had two penalty kicks correctly disallowed by VAR for handball and foul infringements, denying them a route to the match's goal. Consequently, South Africa sit third in the standings with five points, while Algeria also remains on five points after the draw.

Uganda Cranes currently lead the group with six points. Their next and final match in Group C is scheduled for Monday, where they will face South Africa. A draw in this match would be sufficient for the Cranes to advance to the quarter-finals. Separately, Algeria will also play Niger on Monday at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi.
