Uganda Cranes head coach Paul Put will begin preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a new assistant after Sam Ssimbwa exited the technical team, according to reports.

Ssimbwa, who served as Put's deputy since the Belgian's appointment, will not have his contract renewed by the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA). This decision comes despite Put recently extending his stay with the national team until 2018.

The development leaves the door open for either Morley Byekwaso (currently unattached) or Fred Muhumuza (Vipers SC assistant coach) to join the Cranes' bench. Both coaches previously impressed while overseeing the team during the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), where Uganda made history by advancing past the group stage for the first time.

The incoming assistant will immediately face a tough challenge as Uganda battles in Group C of AFCON 2025 against heavyweight opponents Nigeria, Tunisia, and Tanzania. The tournament kicks off later this month in Morocco.

Ssimbwa's departure marks the end of an era for the only Ugandan coach who initially applied for the national team head coaching role before Put's hiring.
