NAMISIABILO, Uganda (Kawowo Sports) – The Ugandan Cycling Federation has officially dispatched its national team to participate in the upcoming UCI Road World and Para Cycling Championships, scheduled to take place in Rwanda from September 21st to 28th, 2025. This prestigious event marks a significant milestone as the first time a World Cycling Championship of this scale has been hosted on the African continent.

The team, comprising eleven athletes across various categories, was formally flagged off from the National Council of Sports headquarters in Lugogo recently. Assistant General Secretary Milton Chebet expressed his commendation for the team's readiness, wishing them success at the global competition. Chebet also emphasized the importance of continued government support and encouraged private sector partnerships to aid in talent development, stating, "I salute you for preparing a team that will compete at the World Championships in Rwanda. I wish you the very best at this global event."

The Ugandan contingent features a blend of experienced and promising riders. Charles Kagimu, a veteran athlete, will compete in the demanding elite men's road race, covering 267.4 kilometers. In the Under-23 category, Lawrence Lorot, Arafat Kimuli, and Shafik Mugalu are set to tackle an 111-kilometer course. The Under-18 category race, spanning 74 kilometers, will see Paul Miiro, Atiimu Kagaba, and Michael Loobo competing.

For the women's events, Mary Aleper, Florence Nakagwa, and Miria Nantume will race the Under-23 category distance of 111 kilometers. Trinitah Namutebi, representing the elite women's field, will cover the 164.6-kilometer course.

Officials accompanying the team include head coach Isaaka Bukenya, team manager Kigongo Semakula, team coordinator Augustine Niyonzima, and chaperone Shakira Nantongo.

The participation of the Ugandan cycling team represents a proud moment for the nation as it sends its athletes to compete on home soil for the first time in a continental world championship.
