Uganda’s Gazelles made a strong statement in their opening game at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket, defeating Guinea 88-51. Star forward Melisa Akullu led the charge with an efficient 26-point performance, adding 7 rebounds in just 22 minutes of play.
The Gazelles set the tone early, closing the first quarter with a 29-19 lead. Their defensive intensity increased in the second quarter, limiting Guinea to just 12 points while scoring 21 to take a 45-31 halftime advantage. The third quarter sealed the win, with Uganda outscoring Guinea 28-8—starting with 22 unanswered points.
“Our coaching staff prepared us well, and we knew this win was crucial before facing tougher opponents like Senegal next,” Akullu reflected post-game. “We stayed focused, moved the ball well, and got the job done.”
Point guard Perus Nyamwenge orchestrated the offense effectively, dishing 7 assists and grabbing 4 steals. Captain Jane Asinde contributed a well-rounded 15 points, 7 assists, and 5 rebounds, while all but one Gazelle player scored. For Guinea, Masseny Kaba led with 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Aicha Maara added 11 points and 6 assists.
Uganda now shifts focus to Monday’s high-profile matchup against record champions Senegal. “We beat them in 2023, but this is a new challenge,” Akullu noted. “We’ll stay disciplined, rebound strong, and execute our game plan to compete.”
With momentum on their side, the Gazelles aim to keep their strong start rolling in the tournament.
