Uganda’s national football team, the Cranes, will make history this weekend as they compete in their debut African Nations Championship (CHAN) quarterfinal match. The team is slated to battle defending champions Senegal at Mandela National Stadium in Namboole on Saturday, August 23, 2025.

Senegal secured their knockout-stage spot after finishing second in Group D, following a tense 0-0 draw with Sudan on Tuesday. The match, held at Zanzibar’s Amaan Stadium, saw Senegal reduced to ten men after Mbaye Yaya Ly’s late red card. Despite matching Sudan’s five-point group tally, Senegal trailed on goal difference.

Uganda’s historic advancement contrasts with Senegal’s quest to retain their title. The tournament’s other quarterfinal fixtures include Sudan facing Algeria, Kenya taking on Madagascar in Nairobi, and Tanzania versus Morocco in Dar es Salaam on August 22.

In related action, Nigeria claimed their first CHAN 2024 victory with a 2-0 triumph over Congo. Goals from Nasarawa FC’s Anas Yusuf and Ramo Stars’ Alimi Sikiru sealed the win, while Congo’s Charles Atipo saw a red card in stoppage time. Nigeria had previously lost matches to Sudan and Senegal in the group stage.
