Uganda's Chief of Defence Forces Visits Kinshasa for Military Talks

General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda's Chief of Defence Forces, made his way to Kinshasa for crucial talks with Congolese military officials. The meeting between General Muhoozi and Lt Gen Jules Banza Mwilambwe, Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), aimed at enhancing regional security and fostering closer military collaboration between the two nations.

During the discussions, the military leaders assessed the progress of Operation Shujaa, a joint military campaign initiated in 2021 to combat the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a rebel group linked to ISIS, known for instigating violence in eastern DRC and western Uganda. The operation has succeeded in significantly weakening ADF strongholds and bringing back stability to regions in North Kivu and Ituri provinces.

General Muhoozi expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of Operation Shujaa, noting a decline in attacks and the gradual return of displaced communities to their homes. The meeting culminated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to broaden cooperative efforts, intelligence sharing, and capacity building between the Ugandan and Congolese forces.

General Banza commended the professionalism and efficacy of the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) in joint operations, highlighting the positive impact on communities affected by terrorism and armed conflicts. This visit underscores Uganda's commitment to enhancing security cooperation within the Great Lakes region.

Operation Shujaa, which commenced following ADF attacks in Kampala, has been pivotal in targeting ADF militants within Congolese territory, resulting in the neutralization of numerous fighters, destruction of camps, and the recovery of weapons. Despite challenges like rugged terrain and ADF's elusive tactics, both countries affirm the operation's significance in regional counterterrorism efforts.

As Uganda and DRC strengthen their relations through various collaborative ventures, including infrastructure projects and trade agreements, the recent discussions in Kinshasa signify a step towards sustained security and stability in the region.
