Uganda's U20 women's national team, the Queen Cranes, has secured a spot in the final qualification round of the FIFA U20 Women's World Cup after defeating Zambia on Saturday.
The Queen Cranes clinched a 1-0 victory in the second leg, played at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium, with Mary Katono scoring the lone goal in the seventh minute. This goal proved to be the decider, sending Uganda through on a 2-1 aggregate scoreline. The first leg had ended in a 1-1 draw at FUFA Stadium, Kadiba.
Uganda will now face Ghana in the final qualification round. Ghana secured their spot by eliminating South Africa with a dramatic 1-0 stoppage-time win in the second leg, following a 2-2 draw in the first leg.
Africa has four guaranteed slots at the FIFA U20 Women's World Cup, and eight teams will compete for these spots. The remaining matchups for the final qualification round are Ghana vs. Uganda, Benin vs. Ivory Coast, Cameroon vs. the winner of Kenya and Tanzania, and Malawi vs. the winner of Nigeria and Senegal.
The final qualification round is scheduled to take place in May this year.
