The Uganda People's Congress (UPC) has thrown its weight behind Jimmy Akena's presidential bid for the 2026 elections, defying a recent court ruling that invalidated his party presidency. This announcement comes as the Independent Electoral Commission begins the nomination process for the upcoming polls.
Akena has reiterated his intention to run for president, despite a July 18, 2025, court ruling that declared his nomination for a third term as UPC president illegal. The court, presided over by Justice Bernard Namanya, cited a violation of the party's constitution, which limits the presidency to two five-year terms. Akena has served two terms, from 2015 to 2020 and 2020 to 2025.
The court ordered that Akena's nomination be quashed and barred the party from nominating him again. However, addressing the media at the party's Kampala headquarters, Akena acknowledged the ruling but vowed to contest the presidency in 2026, stating that he is well-prepared for the race.
"There are masquerades within UPC, and I don't think anyone is as prepared as I am to run for the presidency in 2026," Akena declared. He also announced plans to hold a virtual Delegates’ Conference on July 26th to address party issues, despite initial police hindrance.
Faizo Muzeyi, the party's head of media and communications, emphasized that Akena's bid is a step towards revitalizing UPC's legacy and providing an alternative platform for voters. Muzeyi also revealed that the party will conduct its internal elections on August 16 and 18, 2025, urging all stakeholders to ensure peace and safety during the process.
"Akena's candidacy is an effort to bolster the party's influence and reclaim its historical significance in Ugandan politics," Muzeyi stated.
