In an electrifying night of darts at the Alexandra Palace, former champions Michael van Gerwen and Gary Anderson both secured their places in the third round of the World Darts Championship. Meanwhile, sixth seed Danny Noppert was ousted in a thrilling sudden-death leg.
Van Gerwen, who had a lackluster performance in his opening match, bounced back strongly against William O'Connor. The Dutch star averaged 100.20 in his 3-1 victory, setting up a third-round clash with German debutant Arno Merk. Van Gerwen's highlight reel included back-to-back ton-plus finishes and a 121 and 127 checkout in consecutive legs.
Fellow Dutchman Noppert, however, couldn't replicate his teammate's success. The high-ranked player suffered a surprising second-round exit, falling to England's Justin Hood in a heart-stopping sudden-death leg. This marks Noppert's third consecutive second-round elimination in the tournament.
Anderson, on the other hand, showcased his resilience by overcoming a set deficit to defeat Connor Scutt 3-1. In the final match of the night, Josh Rock will face Australia's Joe Comito, concluding a dramatic session before the Christmas break.
The World Darts Championship will resume this weekend with a double session at 12:30 PM and 7:00 PM to kick off the third round. The schedule for the third round will be confirmed on Wednesday. Fans can watch every match exclusively live on Sky Sports' dedicated darts channel until January 3.
