After facing a period of uncertainty, Welsh boxer Joe Cordina is now looking towards a more stable future with a fresh promotional agreement and a new trainer. Cordina has recently extended his partnership with Matchroom and will now be training with Gary Lockett. The 32-year-old is set to make his return to the ring on July 5, after a 14-month hiatus, where he will fight Mexican Jaret Gonzalez Quiroz on the undercard of the Jack Catterall-Harlem Eubank event at Manchester's AO Arena.

Cordina, a former IBF super-featherweight champion, will be transitioning to the lightweight division for his upcoming bout. Trainer Lockett expressed his belief that moving up from 130lbs to 135lbs will make Cordina stronger and enhance his performance, addressing concerns over past flat showings in fights against Edward Vazquez and Anthony Cacace.

Having witnessed Cordina's career highs and lows, Lockett highlighted the importance of Cordina being physically strong and at his best weight for optimal performance in the ring. The decision to train with Lockett marks a shift from Cordina's previous trainer Tony Sims, with Cordina opting to return to Wales for training to be closer to his family.

Despite setbacks like a canceled fight against WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson in 2024, Cordina remains determined to secure his family's financial future through boxing. Lockett has noticed Cordina's hunger for more titles and a desire to achieve greater success in the sport, emphasizing the fighter's focus on returning stronger than ever.

With Cordina's comeback fight approaching, his collaboration with Lockett is seen as a step towards reclaiming past glory and aiming for bigger opportunities in the competitive world of boxing.
