Former WCW star Buff Bagwell, a prominent figure during the late 1990s and early 2000s wrestling era, has faced a devastating health setback. The 55-year-old wrestler recently underwent an above-the-knee amputation of his leg, a consequence of injuries sustained in a severe car crash five years ago. The news was shared by his longtime friend Steve Stasiak on social media.
Bagwell, who rose to fame during the iconic Monday Night Wars between WCW and WWE, has been battling complications from the 2020 accident ever since. Despite multiple surgeries and extensive rehabilitation, his injuries never fully healed, ultimately leading to the amputation. Stasiak described the emotional toll of the situation, stating, "This one is hard. For him. For everyone who knows and loves him."
The Georgia native, known for his time in the nWo faction, has not wrestled at the top level since his brief stint with WWE in 2001. Over the years, he made occasional appearances in promotions like TNA and on the independent circuit, with his last match taking place in November 2024.
Bagwell’s journey since the accident has been marked by immense challenges. In a previous interview, he detailed the crash, which occurred after he blacked out at the wheel following alcohol consumption. The incident left him with severe damage to his right leg, including a ruined kneecap. He underwent multiple surgeries, spending seven weeks in the hospital at one point, but the injuries proved insurmountable.
Despite the physical and emotional toll, Bagwell has found solace in sobriety and spirituality. He has been sober since August 2022 and credits his fiancée Stacey and his faith for helping him through the darkest moments of his life. "The last three years of my life, I get overwhelmed with joy," he shared.
Fans and fellow wrestlers have rallied around Bagwell, offering messages of support and encouragement. Stasiak urged the wrestling community to send love and positivity his way, emphasizing Bagwell’s resilience and the impact he has had on the sport. "Buff was one of the brightest stars of a wild era in wrestling," Stasiak wrote. "It’s who he is as a person—past the lights, past the persona—that I hope people think about today."
