A catastrophic fire erupted at a shopping center in the Iraqi city of Kut on Wednesday night, claiming the lives of at least 55 people and leaving many others injured, according to state media reports. The blaze, which has since been brought under control, tore through the newly opened Corniche Hypermarket Mall, a multi-story building that had been operational for just five days.
Regional Governor Mohammed al-Miyahi described the incident as a "tragedy and a calamity," vowing to take legal action against the mall’s owner. Videos broadcast by Iraq’s INA news channel showed flames engulfing several floors of the building as firefighters battled to extinguish the fire. Social media footage also captured scenes of individuals stranded on the roof and the charred interior of the mall.
Rescue teams managed to save several people from the burning structure, but ambulances were still transporting casualties to hospitals in Kut—located approximately 160 kilometers (100 miles) southeast of Baghdad—as late as 4:00 AM local time. Authorities are continuing their search for missing victims.
Among the victims was Dr. Nasir al-Quraishi, who lost five family members in the fire. "A disaster has befallen us," he told AFP. "We went to the mall to have dinner and escape power cuts at home. An air conditioner exploded on the second floor, and the fire erupted. We couldn’t escape it."
Medical sources reported that over 50 bodies have been recovered, many of which remain unidentified. An investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway, with preliminary findings expected within two days.
Governor al-Miyahi emphasized the need for a "serious review of all safety measures" in the wake of the tragedy, which has left the community in shock. The Corniche Hypermarket Mall, located in the heart of Kut, had been a recent addition to the city’s commercial landscape.
This is a developing story, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
