Liverpool has completed the acquisition of Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez in a deal worth £40 million, marking another significant move in their summer transfer window. The 21-year-old Hungarian defender has reportedly signed a five-year contract with the club, becoming the latest addition to head coach Arne Slot's squad.
Kerkez, who impressed last season with two goals and six assists in 38 Premier League appearances, expressed his excitement about joining the Reds. "It's a real honour for me, a privilege to come to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world, [the] biggest club in England," he told Liverpool's official website. "I'm just really, really happy and excited."
This signing pushes Liverpool's total summer spending past the £200 million mark, following earlier deals for Jeremie Frimpong (£29.5 million from Bayer Leverkusen) and Florian Wirtz, whose transfer could become a British record at £116 million. Additionally, the club's agreement for Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili (£29 million) will officially take effect on July 1.
Kerkez, originally signed by Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes during his tenure at Bournemouth, joins a team in transition. Bournemouth has already secured a replacement in Adrien Truffert from Rennes for an initial £10.1 million.
Analysts believe Kerkez could provide fresh energy to Liverpool's left-back position, where Andy Robertson is entering the final year of his contract. "Liverpool moved swiftly to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, and they appear to be enacting their left-back succession plan with the same efficiency," said Sky Sports football writer Nick Wright.
With this latest acquisition, Liverpool continues to strengthen its squad ahead of the new season, aiming to compete at the highest level in both domestic and European competitions.
