Erling Haaland's Struggles in the Most Challenging Position
Manchester City's striker, Erling Haaland, is facing a tough time on the field, described by his manager as playing in "the most difficult position on the planet."
Cody Gakpo admits players held candid discussions after a dismal 3-0 loss at Anfield, calling the result an "embarrassment" for the club.
Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo has disclosed that the squad engaged in frank internal discussions following their humiliating 3-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest last weekend. The Dutch international described the loss as an "embarrassment" and emphasized the need for collective accountability.
The Reds' turbulent season continued with the shock loss, leaving them languishing in 12th place in the Premier League. Injuries, tactical adaptation issues under manager Arne Slot, and underwhelming performances from new signings have compounded the team's struggles. Gakpo, who has contributed three goals and two assists in 12 appearances this term, admitted the squad held impromptu talks to address their shortcomings.
"After the game, there was a sense of embarrassment losing 3-0 at home in front of our fans," Gakpo stated. "We spoke openly about what needs to change. It wasn’t a formal meeting, but we all agreed on taking responsibility."
Liverpool have repeatedly squandered opportunities to salvage results, conceding late goals against Crystal Palace, Chelsea, and Manchester United. Gakpo acknowledged the pattern is concerning but insisted the team is working to rectify it through training.
"We’ve shown fight but failed to finish games strongly," he added. "We must avoid falling behind and be more clinical. These repeated lapses are something we’re focused on fixing."
Meanwhile, the 24-year-old revealed he remains in contact with former PSV teammates, though he avoids discussing Liverpool’s current challenges. During his time at PSV, Gakpo scored 55 goals in 159 appearances, earning Dutch Footballer of the Year honors in 2022.
Liverpool face a pivotal Premier League clash against West Ham on Sunday. Both teams are grappling with poor form, but the Reds hold a historical edge, having won 86 of their 153 meetings with the Hammers. Fans will be hoping the squad’s recent introspection translates into improved performances on the pitch.
