MUBS Research Initiatives Aim to Transform Lives in Uganda

The Makerere University Business School (MUBS) is spearheading research projects aimed at addressing critical societal issues. Through the MUBS Economic Forum, scholars are working on innovative solutions to improve local communities. The forum, established in 2011, bridges the gap between academic research and real-world problems.

Focus on Renewable Energy

One research group, led by Mr. Joseph Mukasa, explored the use of briquettes as an alternative to traditional charcoal. This study addresses deforestation and environmental degradation. By promoting briquettes, researchers hope to reduce the reliance on charcoal, preserving forests and promoting sustainable energy sources.

Enhancing Cassava Value Addition

Another significant research effort focuses on adding value to cassava, a staple crop in Uganda. Researchers identified challenges faced by cassava farmers, including low productivity and limited market access. By improving processing technologies and market feedback mechanisms, the team aims to boost cassava’s economic value and enhance farmers’ livelihoods.

Boosting Coffee Consumption Among Youth

Research led by Mr. Darious Mugabe examined coffee consumption patterns among the youth in Kampala. Findings revealed low coffee consumption due to limited awareness and poor-quality local coffee. By understanding youth preferences and improving coffee quality, the researchers aim to increase domestic coffee demand, benefiting local farmers and the economy.

Addressing Climate Change and Food Security

In the Karamoja sub-region, researchers assessed the impact of climate change on food security. The study, conducted by Mr. Deresem Orichom and his team, highlighted severe food insecurity in the region. They analyzed policy frameworks for climate change adaptation and mitigation, aiming to enhance food security and resilience.

Transformative Impact and Future Directions

The acting principal of MUBS, Prof. Moses Muhwezi, praised the Economic Forum for its impactful research. He emphasized the importance of engaging stakeholders throughout the research process to ensure practical implementation of findings. Prof. Muhwezi also called for continuous collaboration with policymakers to drive research-based policy development.

In conclusion , MUBS researchers are not only focused on generating knowledge but also on translating research into practical solutions. Their work demonstrates the potential of academic research to transform communities and improve lives.
