Amanda Anisimova has pulled off a stunning comeback victory over world No 2 Iga Swiatek, securing her place in the semifinals of the WTA Finals. The 24-year-old American fought back from a set down to win 6-7 (3-7) 6-4 6-2 in a thrilling match.
The win marked a significant upset, given Swiatek's dominant form earlier in the season. The Polish star had previously thrashed Anisimova 6-0 6-0 in the Wimbledon final, but Anisimova gained revenge in the US Open quarter-finals and repeated the feat in their latest encounter.
The match was a closely contested affair, with both players holding their serve for the first 12 games. Swiatek eventually took the first set in the tiebreak, but Anisimova raised her game in the second set, breaking Swiatek's serve in the 10th game to level the match.
In the deciding set, Anisimova took control, breaking Swiatek to lead 3-1 and never looking back. The win marked a major breakthrough for Anisimova, who is competing in her debut WTA Finals.
Elena Rybakina joined Anisimova in the semifinals after defeating Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-4 6-4. Rybakina, the former Wimbledon champion, had already recorded victories over Anisimova and Swiatek in the group stage. She reflected on her win, saying, "It was tough, especially in the second set when I was up and I lost a bit of concentration. Ekaterina is always a tough opponent, she also has a big serve."
The WTA Finals continue on Sky Sports Tennis and Sky Sports+, with World No 1 Aryna Sabalenka set to take on Coco Gauff on Thursday. Both players are in contention for a semifinal spot from the Steffi Graf group.
