East Africa’s cultural tourism landscape is set for a major boost following the official launch of the inaugural ROUTES·ROOTS Festival, a new regional celebration aimed at showcasing the continent’s rich heritage, creativity, and traditions beyond wildlife tourism.

The festival, organized by Tio Tours and Travel, was officially unveiled earlier this week, with the first edition scheduled to take place on 29th October 2026 at Lake Saaka Recreation Center in Fort Portal.

The launch positions Fort Portal Tourism City as the debut destination for what organizers describe as a traveling cultural experience that will eventually rotate across Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Rwanda.

Celebrating East Africa Beyond Wildlife

While East Africa has long been recognized internationally for its wildlife safaris and natural attractions, festival organizers say the region’s cultural identity has remained largely untapped within global tourism markets.

Speaking during the launch, Ocen Timothy, Managing Director of Tio Tours and Travel, said the festival seeks to spotlight East Africa’s diverse cultural wealth and create direct economic opportunities for local communities.

“East Africa is more than the Big Five. We have centuries of rhythm, flavor, craft, and stories that the world deserves to experience,” Ocen said. “This event will attract people from across the globe and locally, while promoting our food, culture, and tourism in a way that directly benefits communities.”

What Visitors Should Expect

Set against the scenic crater lakes and rolling green hills of Fort Portal, the one-day launch edition promises a blend of entertainment, heritage, and tourism experiences.

Festivalgoers can expect:

Live cultural performances and traditional dance showcases

Artisan markets featuring handmade crafts from the Tooro Kingdom and across East Africa

Interactive workshops with local craftsmen and cultural groups

Culinary experiences showcasing East African cuisines

Afro-fusion music performances alongside traditional instruments and rhythms

Fireside storytelling sessions celebrating African oral traditions

Organizers also revealed plans for a special Diaspora Homecoming Travel Program, designed to encourage East Africans living abroad to reconnect with their heritage through travel and cultural exchange.

The event will further feature a Taste of the EAC culinary pavilion, a Threads & Roots regional fashion showcase, and a Children’s Heritage Village aimed at preserving and passing on cultural traditions to younger generations.

Regional Cultural Exchange

The festival is expected to bring together cultural expressions from across East Africa, including Batooro amakondere dancers, Buganda drumming ensembles, Maasai beadwork artisans, and Swahili poetry performers.

Visitors will also enjoy a wide range of traditional cuisines, including nyama choma, luwombo, ebihimba, and Zanzibar-inspired spice dishes, creating what organizers describe as a “sensory journey through East Africa.”

Driving Community Tourism

According to organizers, the festival’s vision extends beyond entertainment and tourism promotion. A major focus will be placed on community-led tourism development, with local performers, chefs, artists, and vendors expected to directly benefit from revenue-sharing opportunities.

“Every ticket and vendor slot channels money back to the creators,” Ocen noted. “We’re building a platform where visitors experience East Africa through its people, creativity, and heritage — not just through a safari jeep window.”
