Kirstie Bavington, the reigning European welterweight champion, is determined to make her mark in the boxing world. Despite being sidelined so far this year, Bavington has set her sights on a high-profile matchup with Mikaela Mayer, the WBO welterweight world champion. If Mayer has to wait for her undisputed title fight against Lauren Price, Bavington is ready to step in and take on the challenge.
Bavington, who also juggles a full-time career as a school teacher, has already faced top-tier opponents like Lauren Price and Sandy Ryan, both of whom went on to claim world titles. Her experience and determination make her a formidable contender in the division. "One hundred per cent, I'll fight Mayer, then I'll fight Lauren again," Bavington told Sky Sports. "I deserve a chance now. I deserve a shot."
Earlier this year, Bavington was scheduled to face Olympic star Cindy Ngamba at the Royal Albert Hall in March. However, a last-minute medical issue forced Ngamba to withdraw, leaving Bavington without a fight. The setback has only fueled her desire to return to the ring and prove her worth on the biggest stage.
Bavington’s previous encounter with Lauren Price in the first-ever women's British title fight ended in a unanimous points decision loss. However, she believes she held her own and is eager for a rematch. "I felt like I held my own. Like the first few rounds with Lauren, I was putting it on her a bit. She was just sharper towards the later rounds," Bavington recalled. "I feel like I did better than [Natasha] Jonas. I just want to fight now."
In addition to her boxing ambitions, Bavington is committed to inspiring her students. Balancing her professional career with her role as a teacher, she emphasizes the importance of time management and determination. "I always speak to the kids about time management and stuff. I want to teach the kids that you can manage your time, get your exams done as well as playing sport," she said. Despite her success, her students remain unimpressed. "They still answer back, I'll tell you that!" she joked.
As Bavington continues to train and prepare for her next fight, she remains focused on her ultimate goal: reaching the pinnacle of the sport. "I just want to get back on the biggest stage," she said, "and hopefully that will happen."
With her determination and skill, Kirstie Bavington is ready to prove that she deserves a shot at the top of the welterweight division.
