At the Benjamin Mpaka National Stadium in Dar-es-salaam on Saturday, August 9, 2025, Mauritania earned their first victory of the 2024 Championship of African Nations (CHAN), edging out Central African Republic (CAR) 1-0 in a tightly contested Group B clash.
The breakthrough came in the 9th minute when Ahmed El Moctar capitalized on an assist from Abdallahi Mahmoud, steering the ball past CAR’s defense. The goal proved decisive, lifting Mauritania to four points in the group after a draw, loss, and win.
In the second match of the day, co-hosts Tanzania maintained their perfect record with a 2-1 victory over Madagascar. Clement Mzize, a forward for Young Africans, scored both goals for Tanzania in the 13th and 20th minutes. Madagascar’s Mika Razafimahatana managed a late consolation goal in the 34th minute.
CHAN 2024 continues to showcase talent from domestic leagues across Africa, with teams competing exclusively with players registered locally. Both matches highlighted the tournament’s competitive spirit as nations vie for progression in the group stages.
Mauritania’s win marks a turning point in their campaign, while Tanzania’s three consecutive victories solidify their dominance in Group B early on.
