Senegal Claims Bronze in Thrilling CHAN Showdown Against Sudan

Senegal clinched the bronze medal at the 2024 Championship of African Nations (CHAN) tournament, co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. The Teranga Lions clinched third place with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Sudan, ultimately winning the penalty shootout 4-2.

The match started with Sudan taking an early lead through Mohamed Tia Asad in the 6th minute. Senegal, the defending champions from 2022, equalized in the second half when Seyni Mbaye Ndiaye found the back of the net in the 58th minute.

Despite Sudan's efforts to secure a winning goal, Senegal's defense held firm, notably blocking a crucial chance from Maaz Kandani Koko. The game remained deadlocked at 1-1 after 90 minutes, leading to a penalty shootout.

Ugandan referee Shamilah Nabadda oversaw the penalties, where Senegal's Issa Kane, Vieux Cisse, Libasse Gueye, and Layousse Samb all converted their spot-kicks. For Sudan, Mohamed Saeed Ahmed and Ahmed Tabanja were successful, but Walieldin Khidir and Musab Makeen missed their attempts.

Senegal's Daouda Ba was named the man of the match for his outstanding performance. The bronze medals were presented by the CAF vice president, accompanied by other executive committee members, Deputy Speaker of Uganda's Parliament Rt Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, and Uganda FA president Moses Magogo. The ceremony was followed by a thrilling performance by Uganda's top musician, Jose Chameleon.
